UK Prime Minister Liz Truss was noticeably absent from Monday afternoon’s parliamentary session.

Jeremy Hunt, the fourth Chancellor of the Exchequer in as many months, was to present the new, new mini budget to replace the old one for which the PM had been sticking to her guns, and then scapegoating Kwasi Kwarteng and sacking him.

(She said she was incredibly sorry to lose him — she sacked him for agreeing with her policies — and thanked him for his contribution. Toward devastating the economy?)

These are the moments that stood out when I watched the proceedings on BBC.

Leader of the House, Penny Mordaunt:

“The Prime Minister cannot be here, as she had to attend to urgent business. She may join us later this afternoon.”

Guffaws!

Further probing from parliamentarians demanded what could be more urgent that fixing her mess and elicited the response that Liz had instructed Penny not to reveal the real reason for her non-appearance.
