Triumph — I survived my shopping spree and stayed alive

I’m still in one piece and found peace in the process

The fear around our foray to a shopping mall on Wednesday morning led to a restless night.

This was our first public outing since South Africa declared a State of Disaster on Sunday.

The enormous question on my mind was,

Will they have toilet paper?

We only had one roll left.

I could do without other items on my list, but bog-roll was non-negotiable. I’d dig my heels in and have a tantrum if I didn’t get my precious paper.

The journey begins

We stopped off to fill our water bottles at the local center before driving the 30 kilometers to a larger mall in a town more likely to have stock.

(We live in the countryside, so the odds of completing my shopping list in these crazy times improve the further we travel.)

Still obsessing on the most popular product on the planet, I popped into the small grocers to check if they had any. My fear was that we’d come back empty-handed from our epic journey to town.

My eyes lit up as I approached the shelves — brimming with the stuff and the 9-pack was on special!
