The only reason I have one is there are no landlines in the rural area where we stay nor fiber cable for internet connection.

Mine is over five years old but I can make phone calls and connect with friends on WhatsApp using my wifi data connection (much cheaper than the high price of airtime in South Africa.

I hardly ever use it unless my laptop is out of power due to regular power outages here.

I’ve replaced the battery once, but other than that, have no desire to upgrade to the latest planet-polluting gadgets.

Our neighbor on the next smallholding gets a new smartphone when his contract is due for upgrade but has no idea how to use all the fancy features — more of a status symbol!
