Thanks for the history. The debate on statues continues in South Africa 26 years into democracy. University of Cape Town removed a statue of Cecil John Rhodes in 2015. On 13 July his head was removed by an angle grinder from his statue at the Rhodes Memorial, built at the foot of Table Mountain in 1912.

I could say more, but you've given me an idea for a story! Appropriate as it's Heritage Day in South Africa.

Footnote: We should put them in museums to educate but not continue to humiliate in public spaces.
